Magnetic Particle Inspection

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI): Accurate Detection of Surface and Subsurface Defects in Ferromagnetic Materials.

Magnetic Particle Inspection is a widely used NDT method for detecting surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as steel and iron. At Inspection Quality, we provide advanced MPI services using both dry and wet techniques to ensure the integrity of critical components in demanding environments such as offshore platforms, power generation facilities, and industrial manufacturing plants.

Our expert technicians induce a magnetic field into the component and apply finely milled ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid. Any surface-breaking or slightly subsurface cracks disrupt the magnetic field, attracting the particles and creating a visible indication of the defect. MPI is particularly effective in detecting fatigue cracks, weld discontinuities, and stress-raising linear defects.
Typical MPI applications include:

  • Cost-effective preventive maintenance tool
  • Weld inspections in pressure vessels and piping
  • Inspection of machined components and forgings
  • Bridge and structural steel assessments
  • In-service checks of rotating equipment and load-bearing structures

Why choose MPI with Inspection Quality?

  • Rapid and sensitive crack detection
  • Real-time results with minimal preparation
  • Performed to standards such as ASTM E709 and ISO 9934
  • Ideal for field or workshop environments
